Monthly Growth | When Fear Speaks

There are moments in life when fear speaks louder than trust.

For me, one of those moments is flying. I don't enjoy flying. In fact, just thinking about stepping onto a plane makes my stomach tighten. Yet, because my brother lives in the United States, I board a plane every year to visit him. In addition I love traveling.

Every time I fly, I need to gather a little courage. I know that statistically flying is one of the safest ways to travel, but fear doesn't always respond to facts. It speaks its own language. And every time the plane lands safely, I feel an incredible sense of relief.

Another situation when fear spoke louder then courage was a few years before, when I faced my final exams. After failing one of them, I began to doubt myself. While studying, there was one sentence I kept repeating to myself:

"You can do this."

At first, it was simply something I wanted to believe. But over time, those words became something I truly trusted. Of course, studying was essential. Yet I also believe that repeating those words helped me keep going when fear wanted me to stop.

Years later, when I realised how much those simple words had supported me, I became curious about the power of personal mantras. Before one of my trips to the United States, I spoke with my hypnotherapist about my fear of flying. Together, we found a mantra that felt deeply personal to me — one that I could return to whenever uncertainty began to take over. It didn't or doesn’t make the fear disappear. It gave me something else to focus on.

For me, that is the real power of a mantra.

Not magic.

Not pretending fear isn't there.

But offering the mind a place to rest when everything feels uncertain.

Fear itself isn't the enemy. It has an important purpose. It keeps us safe and alerts us to danger. But sometimes fear also appears when something beautiful is waiting on the other side. I don't want fear to make every decision for me. I want courage to have a voice too.

Maybe your courage doesn't come through a mantra.

Maybe it comes through your breath.

A conversation with someone you trust.

A quiet walk in nature.

Or perhaps you're still searching for what helps you find your footing.

Whatever it is, I hope you find something that gently reminds you:

You don't have to wait until fear disappears before you choose courage.

With an open heart,

Tiziana
